Exploring the Most Photogenic Parks in and Around Columbus, Ohio
Columbus is a beautiful and photogenic city, full of art installations, murals, and historic architecture that tell the story of its vibrant community. But today, I want to shine a light on one of my favorite parts of the city — its parks.
From lush green spaces to dramatic cliffs and serene waterways, Columbus’s parks offer endless backdrops for photography. Whether you’re planning a portrait session, engagement photos, or just want to capture the beauty of nature, these parks are some of the best spots in and around the city. Here are a few of my personal favorites and what makes each one special.

Jeffrey Park – A Hidden Gem in Bexley
Nestled in the charming Bexley neighborhood, Jeffrey Park is one of my go-to spots whenever I’m scheduling a photo session. Don’t be fooled by its modest size — this park packs a big visual punch.
Towering old trees and a wide, open green space provide a timeless natural backdrop perfect for family portraits or romantic couple sessions. A winding trail leads through a grove of pine trees that runs parallel to Alum Creek, offering soft, filtered light that photographers dream of.
Of course, no visit to Jeffrey Park would be complete without featuring Jeffrey Mansion. Its ivy-covered stone walls and red brick architecture add an elegant, old-world charm that enhances any photo session, especially for engagements or senior portraits.

Three Creeks Metro Park – A Nature Lover’s Haven
If you’re looking for something more immersive and peaceful, Three Creeks Metro Park is a photographer’s paradise. The park blends forest, meadow, and water elements into one cohesive setting, offering endless variety in a single shoot.
The pond, wooden dock, and the bridge that crosses Big Walnut Creek create beautiful compositions with natural reflections and soft water textures. The network of trails — some paved and others leading right down to the creek — gives you plenty of flexibility to mix up your shots. Water-access points here are especially valuable for creating dramatic, intimate portraits that feel connected to nature.

Whetstone Park and the Columbus Park of Roses – A Burst of Color and Elegance
If you’re from Columbus, you probably already know about the Park of Roses, tucked behind the Whetstone Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library on High Street. It’s one of the city’s crown jewels — and for photographers, it’s pure magic.
Every late May through early June, the rose garden explodes into color, with thousands of blooms creating a romantic, almost fairytale atmosphere. The central staircase and platform make for stunning focal points, while the surrounding green lawns are ideal for group portraits or family photos. Scattered benches throughout the garden provide cozy, candid photo opportunities among the roses.

Quarry Trails Metro Park – Industrial Beauty Meets Natural Wonder
One of Columbus’s newer metro parks, Quarry Trails, is a breathtaking transformation of an old rock quarry into a scenic recreational area. Located off Dublin Road in Hilliard, the park combines rugged cliffs, serene water views, and striking waterfalls — perfect for adventurous photo shoots.
You can capture stunning portraits near the base of the waterfall, or explore the trails that circle Swan Lake and Turtle Cove. Elevated observation decks provide unique vantage points for landscape shots or wide-angle portraits that highlight the park’s dramatic terrain. It’s a great location for anyone wanting an urban-meets-nature vibe.

Hocking Hills State Park – The Ultimate Outdoor Backdrop
While technically outside Columbus, Hocking Hills State Park deserves an honorable mention. Just about an hour’s drive from the city, it’s well worth the trip for photographers seeking jaw-dropping landscapes and dramatic natural features.
Old Man’s Cave is a must-visit with its cascading waterfalls, stone bridges, and towering cliffs. It’s a popular tourist destination, but early morning or weekday shoots can give you more privacy and softer light.
For an easier, accessible option, Conkle’s Hollow offers a paved trail through a serene gorge, ending at a small waterfall. For the more adventurous, the rim trail provides sweeping views from above — though it’s a 2.5-mile one-way hike, so plan accordingly!
Finally, the nearby Rock Climbing and Rappelling Area is a hidden treasure. With its massive rock formations, fern-covered pines, and steep cliff walls, it feels like stepping into another world. It’s typically quieter than Old Man’s Cave but offers equally stunning scenery — minus the crowds.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re a professional photographer or just someone who loves exploring with a camera, Columbus offers an incredible range of natural beauty right within reach. Each of these parks has its own character — from the quiet elegance of Jeffrey Park to the wild grandeur of Hocking Hills.
Next time you’re planning a photo session or simply want to enjoy the outdoors, give one of these parks a visit. You might just find your new favorite shooting spot — or at the very least, another reason to fall in love with Columbus.
